Description | Permanent circuit, inaugurated on May 28th 1972. It was the second permanent circuit in Angola, after Benguela. Its construction started in mid 1971 and they were directed by Brazilian architect Ayrton Cornelson (the same who built Estoril, inaugurated only 21 days later than Luanda) and to Engineer Júlio Basso. Its promoters, António Pinto da Fonseca, Rui Gonzaga Martins and the driver António Peixinho, wanted to call in Angola best cars and drivers. Contrary to what happened in Benguela, this circuit was quite ready on the inauguration day: race direction tower was nearly ready, access roads, heliport and 30 large boxere were ready. Tribunes were temporary, final ones for 20000 spectators have been made later. On track, main new were light panel to be used to segnalize ro driver instead of usual flags. According to somebody, when finished this circuit could have been the best in the world, even better than Nivelles (Belgium), at that time considered the best. This circuit was soon abandoned because of civil war that hit Angola after indipendence, in 1975. Now the circuit is still in use for few local races: in 2007 it will host and event of Angolan Championship. Non to be confused with Morro da Samba proposed circuit. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
