AUTO CLUB SPEEDWAY (EX CALIFORNIA SPEEDWAY)
Description Crazy history of this Superspeedway, projected by Penske Inc., started a long time ago.
On this ground here was a steel factory, Kaiser Steel. After this became insolvent, in 1983 the ground was excavated and it was used as post apocalyptic movie set for Terminator.

Then the ground was bought by Roger Penske. In 1995 construction of the track started and two years later they were finished. Total expense was approx. 100 million US Dollar of the time. The facility has a two-miles D-shape oval, with some infield courses for motorcycles and cars. It can hosts 92100 spectators.

It was opened on June 1997 with a Winston Cup event. This category hadn’t any event in Southern California since Riverside was closed, in 1988.

Since 1999 the circuit has been owned by ISC (International Speedway Corporation). In the last CART event of the same year, Greg Moore was killed: at 9th lap, sliding maybe on some wet grass thrown on the track, Moore lose the control and the car crashed on internal protection wall at more than 320 km/h - 200 mph. Due to high speed and wet infield grass that didn’t slow the car, Reynard crashed hardly, killing immediately the young Canadian driver. Later it was determined that main cause was insufficient drainage of wet grass, so in February 2000 ISC paved back stretch infield. Later nearly all ovals and many European circuit did the same.

It hosted IRL/Indycar from 2002 to 2005 and since 2004 it has hosted 2 NASCAR events every year. In 2006 it lost Indycar event: it seems that it was not possible to schedule it as NASCAR event was too close.

On February 21st 2008 the circuit was officially renamed Auto Club Speedway of Southern California.

In the parking area of the circuit a kart track has been built, CalSpeed Karting Center.

    Curiosity:
  • During the construction of the cicuit, more than 1,850,000 m³ earth were removed.
